CRUELLA Is The Future In New Extended TV Spot And Stills For Disney's Next Live-Action Feature

Cruella reimagines its title character as a rock ‘n’ roll goth punk rebel, which makes her very cool and easier to root for despite the fact that the eye-popping aesthetic essentially brings out the yucky half of her double-sided personality, the part that’s quick to exploit her friends’ capacity for forgiveness and stuff like that. The screenplay doesn’t quite do justice to the depths of Cruella’s character — don’t expect any subtext about mental illness — although Stone shows off her acting chops during a pretty terrific two-and-a-half-minute birth-of-a-baddie soliloquy. She and Thompson could use juicier dialogue, the script never truly offering them much in the way of memorable exchanges, but they do the best they can with what they’re given, and that ain’t too bad.
